If you’ve been contemplating adopting a dog, a good place to begin looking is at your local animal shelter or humane society.  These are holding zones for dogs that have either been surrendered because their owners couldn’t manage them; have been found abandoned; or, who were taken in because of abuse.  These dogs are referred to as rescue dogs. 

Rescue dogs may range in age from a few weeks to several years old. The benefit of adopting and older dog is that it is most likely house-trained and may already have been spayed or neutered. The older dog will have more maturity and understanding than a puppy, and therefore less inclined to destroy items in your home.
